A responsible owner is one who takes care of your pet, do not suffer and that is as natural as possible, but at the same time not have behaviors that cause problems for society and especially its neighbors. Excessive barking is one of these behavioral problems that may come to disturb our neighbors and that makes many people come to hate dogs.

A normal bark that alerts owners of irregularities is not only normal but healthy and useful even for the dog. However, owners who allow their dogs to bark excessively are creating a problem for the public and may be terminated, and create a rejection by her neighbors.

Why do dogs bark?

Dogs bark for many reasons. Some hunting breeds, like terriers and bassethounds  are used for hunting as he begins to bark and others such as huskies, and Samoyeds Alaska howl, to encourage and direct the flock. It can be difficult to eliminate this behavior inherited in this type of dog.

Other dogs bark out of fear or because they are very territorial. If we install our dog near the fence gives busy sidewalks or submit to other stimuli exciting these will bark a lot. Many dogs bark excessively from boredom, loneliness, and anxiety. If we act on these cases allowing them to play with peers, toys, placing them in isolated places, and removing other stimuli can get them to stop barking.

The first thing to do to correct a problem with a dog that barks excessively is, like anyproblem either psychic or physical, to identify the cause of the dog’s behavior.

Teach your dog to stop barking excessively

  • Never pet or soothe your dog if he barks out of fear. This will reinforce the behavior of barking, which is what you are trying to avoid. Suppress excessive barking. Any positive reaction he gets from you will reinforce his behavior and make it more difficult to control.
  • If your asking for a toy dog barks, a cookie, get a walk, and so on. Do not give in to their demands and reward the undesirable behavior. Wait until he is quiet to give him his reward.
  • Teach your dog the word ”Silence” or ”NO” to know that is an order and knows what to do. To teach ”Quiet” or “NO” to your dog you need to produce a negative stimulus that can get it with a sprayer full of water with lemon juice. When your dog barks and should not bark, spray your mouth and say, “Silence” with a strong voice. The taste is a negative response to bark and he will learn to stop barking about it. This method should be used within 2-3 seconds of barking, or have no effect.
  • Cherish and reward your dog when the ambient is quiet. Dogs want to please, and pleased to learn that when he’s quiet. When your dog is exposed to a stimulus which at any other time would have barked, but decided against it as you teach, reward him with caresses, cookies, snacks and paying more attention.
  • Never strike, maltreat or keep your dog’s mouth shut. This will only teach your dog to fear and can cause more problems as he barks out of fear or aggression will occur. The proper way to reduce your dog to bark is to teach you to identify the cause and show that it is not acceptable behavior.

  • Remember it is your responsibility as the owner to teach acceptable                     behavior and suppressing undesirable behavior …
